Los colémbolos son hexápodos no insectos que habitan prácticamente en cualquier hábitat. Son muy pequeños y existen alrededor de unas 8000 especies en todo el mundo. Por lo general, se reconocen por poseer un órgano retráctil, llamado furca, que les permite saltar considerables distancias teniendo en cuenta su reducido tamaño. Estos minúsculos invertebrados son esenciales para el mantenimiento del suelo y aparecen en grandes cantidades, aunque no siempre podemos verlos. Podemos encontrarlos en todos los continentes, incluso en la Antártida, y se dice que son los animales más abundantes del mundo.
